A language fewer when less people are speaking this language, especially as their first language. A language is considered as an artifact when there is not a single person living who had grown up with it as a first language. When a language is dying, the group of people who are still speaking it will try to preserve it by reaching out to the world and have more people know the language. Linguists and language experts will help create a dictionary for the language.
It is possible for a ‘dead’ language to be brought back to life. In the reading, Siletz the tribe was declared dead by the united states in the 1950s. However, it was brought back to life in the 1970s by Siletz people with their effort of clinging to former reservation lands and cultural anchors in songs and dances.
Now, the public charter school in Siletz teaches the language through the sixth grade. And the tribe is working with another high school in Siletz to start a teaching program where the language is taught as a foreign language to satisfy the language requirements.
