Discussion Post #7

Things are going very well and I am enjoying this process tremendously. It has been the cornerstone of my semester and has given me the motivation to continue learning in general throughout this semester. Being able to get a grip on material that I thought I would never be able to navigate has been extremely important. I had no idea that it would be possible to get a better foundation in a language that I have spoken for my entire life. What has changed is my confidence in knowing that with time, attention, and utilizing my family members I can make heavy progress. I have incorporated the lessons of the different categories of breaking down words. Focusing on tone, syntax, phonology, and making sense of the culture of my target culture and language has helped me create my own study plans. Grouping all the words that I have a hard time spelling in a note section on my phone, finding all the transition words as well as practicing the way tone reflects meaning have all been lessons from a class that I have carried with me. The relationship between language and culture is important, even down to the way people tell time and how punctual people are because of the languages they speak. Risk-taking is emphasized in my learning plan and I am glad it is the thing that I chose to focus on to meet my communicative competence goal. To improve I simply have to learn to trust myself throughout this transformative process.
