Discussion Post #7

My original learning plan was this right here: My learning plan for korean includes learning more vocabulary and practicing speaking and writing in order to further understand how the history of korea, more professional jargon related to my career path of healthcare studies, and further appreciation of korean holidays like chu-seok (korean thanksgiving which was september 13). I have learned only basic things of korean and how to communicate with elders and parents from learning korean at home from my first gen korean parents. Some resources I intend to use include textbooks and books related to healthcare and government so I can understand those terms when used in korean. My studies will help me immerse myself in Korean and get a better grasp of the concept and language as a whole. I was first interested in learning korean from a young age and actually formally learning korean so that I can communicate better with koreans in my career path and those in the workplace.

I believe discussions regarding language structures and learning strategies helped me to understand the target language and culture and develop a greater appreciation for it. I have decided that I want to alter my plan a little bit and add a little section on poetry to analyze historical readings based on our iambic pentameter learning we did and to better understand the korean history and effect on korean. I still do plan on learning korean and using it to specifically learn more in the healthcare field and government as stated and am applying to the program you informed me about earlier to further my experience in the field and korean. The cognates and learning of all pronunciations also helped me to understand how words have developed and give me some insight into the healthcare area of Korea.

I would describe the relationship between language and culture as closely connected because the cultural norms and whole part of Confucianism about respect and family and more that is seen from the history of Korean is still seen today and valued a lot. In order to improve my cultural competence, I definitely need more experience and practice in the Korean language with more vocabulary related to Healthcare and a work setting to build off the cultural competence that I somewhat have from growing up in a Korean household and learning and making use of the language growing up. Based on the Brown reading, the types of competence emphasized in my plan are all four of the competence mentioned in some sort: grammatical competence, discourse competence, sociolinguistic competence, and strategic competence( sensitivity to dialect/naturalness/cultural references and figures of speech). For the grammatical and discourse competence, otherwise known as organizational competence, I plan on learning/focusing on vocabulary, especially in healthcare, government, and some origins of words and the origin of Korea through its own history. And for sociolinguistic and strategic competence, otherwise known as pragmatic competence, I plan on focusing on sensitivity to the dialects and naturalness and learning some words key to the ones and am currently looking to find internship opportunities to grow in my career interest and korean knowledge as well especially in sociolinguistics and how they are used in real korean society and workplace. For cultural references and figures of speech, I will continue to delve myself into the culture and incorporate movies and some movies/shows to help develop those references and to introduce a visual component to better understand the figures of speech.
