Discussion Post #5

Indonesian culture is something that greatly interests me, so picking one aspect to focus on is difficult. My previous research was on the topics of music and religion, so these have been incorporated into my learning plan–but I want to research a topic that I wasn’t able to become as familiar with when I was in Indonesia. Indonesian fashion is a topic that I hope to learn more about. Traditional Indonesian clothing is full of elaborate and richly decorated textiles, while trendier clothing choices are heavily influenced by Korean music groups and street fashion. Exploring stylistic choices related to language because of language use in describing beautiful garments, and because many tell a story in and of themselves. Like gestures, clothes can be a form of non-verbal communication. Clothing can reflect history, social, and religious norms because it can either serve as a tool of individualistic or collectivist thought. Learning the values of Indonesian culture reflected through clothing will ultimately improve my understanding of the Indonesian language. In order to talk about clothing, I will need to learn special vocabulary regarding garments. Currently, I do not know the Indonesian words for items such as a skirt, shirt, shoes, etc. I will also need to learn phrases to explain patterns and sewing techniques. Until now, I have not considered focusing on this type of vocabulary in my learning plan, but I plan on incorporating fashion vocabulary. Additionally, I will need to know vocabulary related to colors and length/distance. These words are already incorporated into my learning plan, under basic vocabulary. I look forward to learning more about the Indonesian language and culture through my research into clothing styles.
