Discussion Post #5

What interests me the most about South Korean culture is how people are able to create meaningful interactions through various outlets. For example, when studying abroad in Seoul, I noticed how people would use their free time cafe hopping, going to karaokes, and eating out with friends. It was an aspect of Korean culture that I wanted to participate in with my own friend groups, but to do so, it is important that I learn the vocabulary in order to engage in them.

Therefore, I would need to learn how to read and understand the karaoke machines since they are all in Korean from what I had noticed throughout my time living in Korea. I also would need to learn how to speak to the workers in an establishment whether it be to ask for a room to do karaoke or to be able to order my food.

Thus, I had already created a learning plan where the objectives are centered around these activities. I have included learning hangul to learn how to read and also added phrases to order in restaurants. I want to learn how to hold a simple conversation with another person or at least know some key phrases/slang in order to be able to speak Konglish. I have already begun responding to my Korean roommate with these phrases. For example, I would talk in english about my day and end it with 피곤해, which means I am tired. I want to be able to create these relationships through these activities, therefore it is important that I learn the necessary vocabulary.
