I believe that ideally, a solid fundamental knowledge of a language’s phonetics, phonology, grammar, and semantics should be studied first before delving into more advanced aspects of studying a target culture such as psychology, sociology, or philosophy.
At a young age, my mother taught me basic Korean phonology, vocabulary, and sentence structure. Additionally, I have learned about Korean society by simply talking to Native Koreans about their experiences at home, or by consuming Korean media. Watching YouTube videos, dramas, and movies or listening to music are ways for me to gain a more holistic understanding of the language, instead of only learning Korean from a textbook. I feel that I can learn about specific non-verbal mannerisms, common expressions, and other implicit elements of Korean.
Non-academic, practical learning through Korean media is certainly my favorite, however I do plan to continue perfecting my knowledge of Korean language structure since it is far from perfect. I especially would like to focus on syntax, since I frequently make basic errors in that department.
