Since the presentation till now, I have learned a lot about the Korean language. The original plan was to mostly learn how to order food and be able to memorize key phrases in order to have a short conversation with another person. Yet, I have learned so much more than I have originally planned out.
While learning phrases, I learned about the grammar aspect of korean. For example, my language tutor taught me how to create present participles, to make words end with -ing. Another tense I learned was how to make a sentence either past or future. I just have to take the infinitive and add the tenses and I am able to have the opportunity to change the tenses in order for my sentences to make sense.
One strategy I learned from class that I have incorporated into my learning is the idea to write out the sounds. While I have studied the sounds, sometimes certain characters put together make a different sound or there are small details that would differentiate one word from another, so I need to make sure that my pronunciation is correct and that the other party can be able to understand me.
Throughout the lessons, I have learned a lot about the culture, especially pertaining to phrases that the younger generations say. One of the main objectives of my learning plan is to be able to connect with others around my age and to do so, I need to learn the slang and phrases that they use. My language tutor has taught me a lot and I have begun to hold short basic conversations with other Koreans such as my roommate. These conversations are always super fun and I enjoy them.
Language is very important to the culture, especially since there are specific rules on how to talk to a group of people depending on hierarchy and familiarity. For example, I had watched one drama called Marry my Husband, in which the setting takes place in a company and characters included a CEO and employees. I can see how language differed and the different mannerisms such as bowing to your supervisors or joking around with your friends.
I believe that my language learning plan involves sociolinguistic competence and possibly even discourse competence. I am able to start picking up repeating phrases in conversations and am even able to participate even if I say one sentence. I also take into consideration the language I use since I learned the importance of formal and informal depending on who you are talking to. In order to keep improving, I need to keep practicing in order to have a better comprehension and be able to communicate more effectively.
