Looking back at my learning plan presentation I figured out that i had too many goals and made my plan a lot difficult to accomplish just in one semester. I have not applied my plan yet because I am going to learn Korean from second semester but I think my interpersonal communication goals have not changed. I think for interpretive reading I will add a task about analyzing the articles or Korean books word per word or the phrases so I specifically know why or how it is used. I think I also need to focus on one goal for each section of learning or only focus on one or two areas of the language such as reading and writing or speaking and listening. I was amazed to find out how most languages have a language family. Knowing that Korean belongs to Altaic language family surprised me at how many different languages had similar words with this language. This opened up an opportunity and interest for me to learn other languages in the future like Germany, Russian, and Spanish. Learning the language structures and learning strategies helped me understand my target language. When i was examining the phonetics and how Korean used different vowels than english. It brought an understanding why Koreans could not pronounce some phones such as the “F” sound or how Americans cannot stress the “pp” sound in Korean. I think the Korean language is kind of related to the culture. In Korea, younger people have to show respect to those who are older. So the language provides an informal and formal way to say certain words or phrases. I think the only way to improve my communicative competence is to continue to use the language in daily life. I think I should start talking in Korean to my parents when we call and also try to use the language when I communicate with my roommate because she is Korean.
