Discussion #5

I am a huge fan of movies and TV shows and in the past few years, I have started to watch Korean movies and TV shows. There are a lot of good movies in Korea, and at the same time, those movies address social issues and Korean history. For example, the movie parasite addresses conflicts between different classes; Reply 1988, a TV show based on modern Korean history and people’s life during the period of time. Through TV shows and Movies, I have learned a lot about Korean culture and history and how these events influence the Korean society nowadays. Watching Korean movies and TV shows helps me to familiarize with Korean sentences and sound of Korean. From the movie and TV shows, I was able to learn some easy Korean phases. What I am doing is I am replaying certain clips from the movie with useful daily phases, and I practice saying the phrase alongside of the movie clip.

Beside movie, I am also started to listen to Korean songs. I am a music minor and music plays a big part of my life. When I started learning English, I listen to English songs to help with my listening skills. I am not a fan of K Pop, but listen to other Korean music and have my language partner give me better translation with the lyrics really helps me with my understanding of Korean as a language and improve my listening skill.

  • Hi Sam,

Thank you for sharing. I find really valuable that you are exposing yourself to your target language in various ways such as with movies, shows, and music. I also admire how you are replaying certain clips and practicing alongside it. This is such a fantastic way to grow your skills. Further, you bring up such a great point about how you can learn a lot about the culture, history, and language from these various platforms. My exposure to movies and shows also helped me so much in understanding the culture and values of Korea to an extent. If you do like to watch shows and movies a lot, there's actually a 'language learning with Netflix' chrome extension that allows you to have multiple subtitles. This has been useful to me in reading Hangul and working on pronunciation of words because it's hard to pronounce some things properly without reading it since I find sometimes people speak too fast. I hope your exposure to the language in the various ways has been helpful to your language learning! Thanks for sharing!
