I want to learn Korean in order to communicate in a business scenario as well as to interact with people my age while attending Yonsei. During my time studying abroad, I want to find an internship related to my interest in business so I would have to study workplace cultural norms and as well as business-related vocabulary.
Because Korea has a hierarchy structure, I would need to learn more about how to respectfully refer to be people, based on our level of closeness and if they are younger and older than me. For example, in a work and school context, and upper-classman or older coworker would be 선배 and a younger coworker and underclassman would be a 후배. Knowing these types of vocabulary would allow me to present myself as someone who knows and respects Korean culture, and would prevent unknowingly disrespecting cultural norms. In relation to entering the business world, I would have to know a specific set of vocabulary, like work sector names, verbs for certain tasks, the names of different tools. As well as knowing 존댓말 which is respectful language, so understanding which phrases I can use and respectfully communicating by using 요- at the end.
To make friends and make conversations with people my age I would have to know certain types of slang that are widely used. Like knowing the words 남사친 which is a male friend that is just a friend and 모쏠 which means someone whos "forever alone" or never dated. I have attached a website that has a list of commonly used slang phrases. I would also have to learn vocabulary to introduce myself and talk about my interests to other people so that I can hold conversations.
