Discussion #2

It was interesting this week to dive into the cultural differences and looking at the Hofstede Insights tool. The reading did a good job of breaking down the different types and sections of "cultural differences", ranging from collectivism vs. individualism, and direct vs. indirect communication. As well as how nonverbal communication changes in each culture, for example in Colombia holding the tip of your nose is a rude signal but Americans would not know and mindlessly do. Using the Hofstede Insights tool allowed me to look more deeply into the cultures I have experienced and been apart of. They were very contradictory which helped me further analyze how I think and feel, like the Colombian side of me is very Indulgent but I also have the Individualistic aspect from American culture. Even though I have lived in both worlds, I often see the cultural differences with my parents who think very Collectivist and think differently about Power Distance. During my time in Korea, I had to get accustomed to the more conservative patriarchal society and the age system. The formal form of language was also confusing since I didn't want to be unknowingly rude to other people. I had a minor run-in during a presentation where I kept shaking my leg which is apparently very bad manners and based on folk-lore decreases your lifespan. I think the best mindset when dealing with different cultures is being receptive and understanding of cultural differences. We can't expect everyone to think or act the same way as us in a different country.
