Discussion #2

Figuring Foreigners Out talks about the difference in how people interact with each other within other cultures. It talks about individualists, collectivists, nonverbal communication, monochronic, polychronic, internal, external, and direct and indirect communication. Hofstede Dimensions of Culture talks about the impact culture has on the workplace. He talks about the power distance index, individualism, masculinity, and long-term orientation. I think these statements are pretty accurate. I definitely think that Korean culture is collective more so than American culture. I have also been to Osage Nation, Oklahoma, where they value nonverbal communication. I’ve also worked at both Korean owned businesses and American-owned businesses and the atmospheres are completely different. Korean workplaces you usually don’t need a lot of direct communication but indirect communication is crucial. In my experience, the opposite is true for the American workplace.
