The word for Hebrew is Ivrit. This is one of the oldest languages in the world. It shares many of the same features of Aramaic/Arabic. I had no idea that while the Jews were living in the Persian Empire, Hebrew was not used most commonly, rather- Aramaic was most prevalent. Historians have discovered that this language was not used for over 2000 years. Over time though, Jews started to speak Yiddish (a language written right to left and uses a Hebrew script). The time when Jews began to use Hebrew more, was for situations such as international trade.
Hebrew is now spoken most commonly in Israel and is the language of the Jews. Only 10 million people are believed to speak this language. Hebrew is a semitic language which derives from the Afro-Asiatic language family. It is the official language of Israel.
