Most Afghanistan holidays are Islamic holidays because of its large presence in Afghan culture. Eid is one of the most popular Islamic holidays which is widely celebrated in Afghanistan. It is a big celebration that notes the end of Ramadan. During Ramadan, Muslims fast for a month to learn about patience, spirituality, and submissiveness to God. On Eid, however, it is forbidden to fast and the festivities last between one to three days. On August 19th Afghans celebrate Afghan Independence Day. International Women's Day is celebrated on March 8 to recognize the political and social struggles that women have overcome. However, over time its lost its political focus and its become a day similar to that of Valentine's Day or Mother's Day.It seems as though a lot of Afghan holidays are politically based. There aren't a lot of "created holidays" like we have in America such as Thanksgiving and Fathers Day, etc.
