Korean variety shows form a large part of modern television entertainment in South Korea. In Korea, the entertainment that appeared for the public's leisure time through the industrial revolution has been expanded into a genre of popular culture in modern society. Nowadays, authentic content is attracting attention, and real entertainment, which shows the true nature of entertainers from various viewpoints and formats, touches the emotional codes of the public, and creates entertainment content for terrestrial and cable broadcasting. Korean variety shows do not have a fixed format but combine various television genres such as dramas, documentaries, and information programs. As a material for the entertainment programs, the public's daily life is actively utilized. The story of events or characters is combined with the basic storytelling of the main event, and the entertainment program is enriched.
Now, many of my friends find Korean Variety Show interesting because Korean entertainment has recently combined human emotional elements with various entertainment formats that have flowed based on talk shows and confrontational entertainment. "Observation entertainment" or "real entertainment" has emerged and is matching the public's taste. My favorite type of Korean Variety Show is Observational entertainment which shows the habits and thoughts of entertainers in everyday life, as well as their mistakes. It gives the audience an insight into their personalities rather than their talents. The beginning of Korea's full-scale observational entertainment is MBC TV's I Live Alone(나 혼자 산다)I Live Alone uses the format of observing the daily life of stars who live alone.
I Live Alone is recognized as one of the "Real-Variety" shows on Korean television. The program is unscripted using documentary techniques with variety shows' elements, which follows the format of other reality television programs such as Infinite Challenge, which airs on the same networks. Every Friday night, this program plays footage from selected Rainbow Club members' everyday lives, both in and out of their homes. As proclaimed on its official homepage, there are about 5 million singles in South Korea and about one-third of South Korean entertainers are not in a relationship. This program shows viewers how single celebrities live and has attained great popularity due to the relatability of the single lifestyles of various celebrities, which are shown without significant filtering. I really enjoyed watching 나 혼자 산다 because it is really interesting. At the same time, some episodes are really meaningful to society as well. For example, due to the COVID-19, Seoul Fashion Week has been canceled. In order to help those rookie fashion designers who really need this chance to promote their product, every member of Rainbow Club became a model and recorded an online fashion show. This is my favorite variety show so far.
