Youtube has been one of my best resources for immersing into the cultural aspect of language learning, from further explanations of grammar usage to short clips of fun variety shows. Korean Variety shows at one point completely consumed my life and I would endlessly watch hundreds of videos on the now-disbanded DramaFever. However recently the trend has switched into Youtube as a result of massive globalization and accessibility for TV production groups to switch into the Youtube market. Studio lululala being one of the most popular studios producing really high-quality youtube videos. 룰루랄라 or lululala itself is an onomatopoeia of someone humming themselves to joy and their mission as a company is to incite their viewers with joy from watching their content. Studio lululala is actually backed by JTBC a massive network and broadcasting company in Korea similar to ABC of FOX. While Studio lululala has many ongoing shows on Youtube I will be discussing only three which in my opinion are some of the funniest. Starting from my least to most favorite 와썹맨-Wassup Man and Season B Season.
와썹맨-Wassup Man
"Wassup man" is led by Joon Park a famous singer from the 90s Idol Boy Group G.O.D, one of the most popular idol groups to have existed in Korea. Joon Park plays the very Americanized Korean-American and goes around Seoul to various different revitalized districts trying to find all the "hot places". In every episode, he is eating a variety of delicious Korean dishes based on recommendations from people around him or trying to find other popular hotspots. It is extremely hilarious as he makes the most obscure comments and tells his honest opinion about the food he eats. The subtitles are on another level, which is common with lululala studios, they find ways to make very generic Korean inside jokes translate into our USA pop-culture mindset. I often find myself going wow I want to visit this place when I go to Korea and try out those dishes.
SeasonbySeason
A new channel created by Rain a very famous Singer/Actor from the early 2000s that had taken a massive break the last four years before blowing up for his "GGANG" music video. The "GGANG" challenge was a TikTok trend where people where mimicking the honestly exaggerated choreography. Afterward, he decided to open his Youtube channel to try new things and show people a new "season" of who he is. In most of the episodes, he brings his friend KCM another famous singer that resembles Winnie the Pooh they are a comedy duo and many of the viewers comment on how they were lovers in their past life. They follow a unique format of including viewer comments, and it is very beneficial to practice my reading skills.
From watching these videos I have learned more Korean Slang and other common phrases that the youth use. It is a really easy way to submerge yourself into the culture with a lot of laughter to come along with it. If you are an avid youtube watcher or like to find new content to watch I definitely recommend watching some of these videos they are absolutely hilarious!
