This week Evelyn tested me on my formal language rules. I expected it so I did a lot better this time. We just went over it orally and not on paper so I am afraid that I’m gonna start forgetting it again. We then started going over some folk stories/legends. I learned that tigers are used a lot in stories. I also learned that the number 4 is important to Korean culture. I has to do with the four seasons and can be seen on the Korean flag as well. It is also incorporated in their national anthem. There are four verses in the anthem, and the lyrics also talk about four seasons in Korea. I had a hard time understanding the lyrics to the national anthem without Evelyn’s help because a lot of the lyrics uses historical vocabulary that is no longer used conversationally between people. Additionally, even though Evelyn helped me with the lyrics, they were also very poetic and had a lot of symbolism and metaphors. This made it even harder to fully understand the lyrics behind the anthem.
