Bi weekly learning #8

In this week’s Korean lesson, my partner and I talked about the current events in Korea, such as the Nth room case, Korean society. Not only in Korea but also in China the Nth room case got so much attention from the public. Nth room case involves blackmailing and the spread of sexually exploitative videos via the telegram app between 2018 and 2020 in South Korea. The number of confirmed victims is a least 103, including 26 minors. There are three main operators of the telegram chat room, god god, watchman, and Doctor. Watchman and doctor have been caught by the police, but only doctor’s identity has revealed to the public. The Nth room case received a lot of public attention, and a lot of people in Korea have signed plead to reveal all the operator’s identity. Many people in Korea even want to revel the nth room’s users’ identities. We talked about the conflict between men and women in society. Korea has always been a man dominated society; some women grew up were suppressed by domination. The Korean government tried to create policies and government agencies for women to smooth the gender gap. In early 2000, the Korean government created an office in government with a goal to improve gender equality. The women in the office created many policies that specifically target men, which received hate from the men group. However, at the same time, they did not use government funding to help women in society but instead used the money to benefit themselves. The women’s office received a lot of hate, specifically from men. Misogyny was developed among men because they felt like their power and rights were taken by the women. Misandry was developed among women because they have been mistreated for so long and they want to fight for themselves. Gender equality websites were created by women; however, these websites were not used for gender equality, websites were used to post hate speech against men and sometimes other women also become their target. Women's rights movement in Korea is extremely twisted, gender equality is not what the women right activist wants, instead they want to have dominance over men. There are a lot of idols in Korea, and many of the idols have become the victims of women's rights activists’ online bullying. They specifically target popular idols; some popular female idols also became their targets. In the past year, several idols suffered from their attacks and two of them committed suicide. Because of the attacks from the misandry groups and misogyny groups, many idols and celebrities chose not to choose a side or have any comments on their attacks. It is a very interesting lesson about Korean culture, and how does the conflict between two genders evolve into the Nth room case.
