In an effort to experience some more of the culture of Indonesia, I wanted to see some Indonesian art. I thought experiencing the artifacts, paintings, and sculptures of the past would help illuminate how Indonesians view the country though its progress and its turmoil. There are quite a few pieces I found online that depict religious characters and scenes. Most sculptures I found were of Islamic and Buddhist idols. There are also a few depictions of the native people in native dress dancing and playing instruments. This led me to the gamalon. The gamalon is a seven to eight keyed bamboo instrument where either one or two players use wooden hammers to play. The gamalon makes a noise similar to other wooden instruments I have heard from Brazil. The instrument is not complex, but the music is very pleasing to the ear. My experience with the art and music of the country helped to illustrate just how rich in culture the country of Indonesia is.
