Artifact #6

I also watched a documentary called The Act of Killing.  This film is more of a documentary that focuses on the mass killings that occurred from 1965 to 1966.  This movie interviews those who carried out the killings and those who were targeted.  The killings occurred as a result of Suharto overthrowing Sukarno.  The killings were conducted under the guise that the country needed to rid itself of communists.  Foreign nationals like Chinese immigrants were targeted along with Indonesians who disapproved of Suharto.  The movie is interesting because such a tumultuous time in the country occurred so recently.  Many of the people mentioned in the film who carried out the attacks still have ties to the government. Some people still believe these actions were noble, while others see them as atrocious.  This documentary demonstrates how much Indonesia has overcome in such a short period.  The documentary also describes what it took from individuals of all nationalities and ideologies to reach the progress it has attained.
