Bu Julie offered to take us to Thai Ginger, a local restaurant on Carry Street. While the restaurant is not Indonesian, it does have some similarities to Indonesian dishes. For example, the menu has items like sate ayam (chicken skewers), nasi goreng (fried rice), and nasi bebek (rice with duck). While I still have not had an authentic Indonesian experience, Bu Julie said this was as close as you can get in Richmond, VA. During the meal, we discussed the food, our activities before lunch, and our plans for the weekend all in Indonesian. One thing I was extremely excited about was that I recognized most of the dishes on the menu as meals I know from Indonesian class. It was also exciting to speak the language off-campus in a more casual setting. I felt less pressure and more comfortable speaking to Bu Julie, Thalia, and Brad.
