This week we researched Indonesia’s history in the 1900’s. I have included my written assignment in class as well as an English translation of the assignment.
Indonesia was influenced by the Dutch during the twentieth century. The Dutch went to Indonesia and other countries in the Pacific to increase trade, control and influence. The Dutch brought their own employees to run business, plantations and politics. This caused positive and negative changes to native Indonesians. Economic classes were developed, more schools were designed with western influence, and skilled and unskilled workers found work. Natives worked as servants and laborers for most Dutch businesses. Urban life also changed in the country. Cities began to develop as centers of international trade. Indigenous people forgot traditions or were forced to stop traditions by their Dutch employers. People moved from villages to cities. Urban life mirrored European traditions and rules.
