105 - Journal #2

How have you organized your self-directed learning plan, and what have you learned so far? How will your studies allow you to investigate your target language and culture more deeply?

Currently, most of my learning plan focuses on learning basic phrases and words. I have not incorporated how to put together sentences. My ultimate goal is to be able to buy different produce at the markets in Bolivia. This will likely mean that I use basic phrases like, “Give me 4 tomatoes,” or something similar. Thus, I plan to add this into my learning plan. All of my learning plan is focused on the spoken use of Quechua and not the written or reading parts. This is mainly due to Quechua speakers being illiterate, which makes Quechua language preservation be through spoken word. My spoken word studies will help me investigate my target language as a result.

What first prompted your interest, and motivated you to start learning?

My interest in learning Quechua was prompted by my grandma who always wanted me to learn because she claimed that Bolivians needed to know the indigenous language of their region. I agreed with her, but it was not until her passing that I decided to take initiative in the dream she had for me.

After receiving feedback from your classmates and Dr. Marsh-Soloway, what changes do you anticipate making?

I must incorporate at least 1-2 activities in my learning plan where I will be able to put together all the phrases I have learned to form sentences.
