SDLC 112 - Learning Journal #2
Upon reflecting during my second learning journal, I think some key exercises that stood out to me during my learning were immersing myself in Korean culture. As silly as it sounds, I think that understanding my culture was a way for me to further understand the language. For example, I made “보쌈” (bossam) following an untranslated recipe. This forced me to further master my reading abilities as well as familiarize myself with words that I was previously not familiar with. As I was reading into the preparation process, I had come across words for ingredients that I recall seeing images of but never actually knew the term for.
Contrasting this with also consuming media and keeping up with korean trends like the viral dubai chewy cookie also known as “두바이 쫀득 쿠키” allowed me immerse myself in Korean culture while keeping it entertaining. Reading short stories or watching short videos that were made by Korean creators were all methods that allowed me to further my vocabulary and understand Korean culture. Something interesting that I noticed during my media consumption of this viral cookie was the length that Koreans were willing to go to consume a cookie. This furthered my understanding of the effects of virality in Korean culture and how trends transform Korean culture.
Overall, being immersed in micro trends and the culture not only contributed to my listening and reading proficiency but also helped me pick up on new words or terms that I’ve never heard or learned prior. I think that this was one of the more entertaining and efficient ways of learning as while it was educational and intentional, there was also an entertaining aspect. Also, being able to talk to other Koreans regarding these things seemed more like an interesting topic as these are current events.
