Today, for my Korean culture reflection, I'm looking at K-pop. Prior to this, I had heard what K-pop was but never fully understood the culture and its importance to South Korea. K-pop is essentially just Korean popular music; this encompasses many different varieties, such as pop music, rock music, Hip-Hop, Etc. K-pop is especially popular among teenagers and young adults, a lot of the people who perform in these groups are very much idolized by young men and women. It is very similar to how bands like Big Time Rush and the Jonas Brothers are viewed in America. The song that I chose to listen to was called ETA by New Jeans. I had never heard of New Jeans before but it was one of the recommended songs when I typed in K-pop on Spotify. and as expected it was a perfect musical creation, most of the song was in Korean with parts being in English which was something that I was not expecting. As I listened to more of these K-pop songs I realized that a lot of them do encompass a bit of English within them. I personally like that it encompassed both English and Korean within the songs, it's great to hear that the culture of Korea is being appreciated by people not only in Korea. groups such as BTS who have sprung up out of nowhere with extreme popularity are expanding their Roots outside of Korea and all over the world. It was my first time listening to these groups but I overall really enjoyed the music. While for myself I'm not sure if I would idolize these people I do understand how these bands could be so popular. The culture of K-pop is similar to the J-pop wave that also has occurred within the past 2 decades. One of the coolest Parts about K-pop is their use of English phrases throughout the songs at first I was unsure about how I felt, but I think as I listened more I began to appreciate it. It acts as a bridge between English speakers and the music, it allows us to listen to the music while we don't understand all of the words but still have a bit of understanding. While it might not be my first choice of music I definitely appreciate experiencing my first taste of K-pop and I plan on adding some of the songs I listen to today to my playlist for my future listening.
